mission overview

AN OUT OF THIS WORLD MISSION FOR SPACE EXPLORERS AND PLANET ARTISTS! GET READY FOR A THRILLING VOYAGE TO THE EDGE OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM…

Meet Luna Patterson! Luna works for the UK Space Agency. She’s Head of Exoplanet Discovery, which means that she specialises in discovering planets outside our solar system and researching them for signs of life and habitats kind to humans.

Luna and her team have already discovered more than 3,000 exoplanets, but they know very little about them and whether they have life on them remains a mystery. There is Proxima Centuri, Gliese 1214B, Kepler 186F, Wasp 124B, Aldebaran B, Corot 33B… and the most exciting of all: Ross 128B. Luna’s research shows that this Earth-sized planet could have a warm climate, oceans, canyons, lakes and maybe life!

What if there were other exoplanets like this? Hidden earths with great moons, spitting volcanoes, dense forest canopies, deep oceans brimming with life, vast plains populated by extraordinary fauna and puzzling creatures?

This is where you come in. Luna is a great scientist, but she’s no artist! She needs help imagining what all these unseen planets look like. And she needs it fast…The Lunar and Planetary Science Conference is coming up!

Luna needs a team of talented artists to create state-of-the-art exoplanets: Will they be icy or covered in sand dunes? Oceanic or jungle-like? How would humans survive there? What creatures would they meet? What adventures would await them?

To bring your exoplanets to life, you’ll learn how to construct a giant sphere, you’ll use print making to build landscapes, you’ll capture sun flares, you’ll create stop motion theatre, and learn how to design a scenic backdrop. As the mission progresses, you’ll discover the art of shadow puppetry: designing, making and animating the creatures you’ve encountered. The mission will conclude on the Friday with an exciting Out of This World performance for parents!

INSPIRED BY THE WORLD OF SPACE SCIENCE, THIS ARTS-BASED MISSION BRINGS TOGETHER CRAFT, PUPPETRY, STORY-TELLING AND PERFORMANCE FOR AN EXCITING EXPLORATION OF OUTER SPACE.
